The Lord himself tops all those called righteous in Luke 23:47. Mortals on the list are Joseph, the husband of Mary who gave birth to Jesus in Matthew 1:19, Simeon who blessed the Christ child in Luke 2:25, Abel in Hebrews 11:4. Noah is called righteous in Genesis 6:9, Cornelius in Acts 10:22, Lot in 2 Peter 2:7. David was called righteous in First Kings 3:6. Rahab also has this honor in James 2:25. Though a prostitute, she was justified by her righteous deeds when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another way.

Noah is called righteous in Ezekiel 14:12 and two others are added to the list. The word of the Lord came to me. "If a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its men, and their animals, even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness," declares the Sovereign Lord.

There are many verses in the Bible about the righteous, especially, in the Old Testament. Why does it say some individuals are righteous when no one is righteous? How do we make sense of this? Obviously, "Righteous" is a relative term. No one is completely righteous except God. We do not have righteousness in and of ourselves, we are credited with righteousness by our faith.

Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness (Verse 3, Chapter 4 of the book of Romans.). It says, "The statement it was credited to him was not written only for Abraham's sake, but also for our sake, to which it will be credited, those who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead" in 4:23-24.

When the faithful to God who are members of his New Testament covenant are compared to unbelievers, we are called righteous. When we are compared to God, we are sinners. To be righteous simply means that we do what is right. We cannot do right with our own power since we have no righteousness of our own. We must depend on the righteousness of Christ.

When the direction of our life is continually following the instructions in the New Testament, and we are relying on Christ for our salvation, Scripture declares us to be righteous. The ones who are called righteous in the Bible were obviously highly esteemed by God, but that is true for all faithful members of his covenant.

You will notice that everything said about the righteous is positive. Jesus called his followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world in Matthew 5:13-14. He is depending on us to spread the word of his glorious gospel. I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life (John 5:24).

The Lord knows that mankind cannot fulfill every requirement for salvation. We are not under law like those of the Old Covenant; we are under grace, according of 6:4 of the book of Romans. We are still required to make every effort to keep his rules, but when we fall short, the blood of Jesus makes up the difference. When we cooperate with him as he works to make us complete, we are accounted as righteous.
